Gatekeeper Resolutions Day 13: Backhand Grips And How To Eliminate Wobble

Day 13! Let’s talk about clean releases today.

  1. When you throw a disc, and it wobbles, that’s robbing you of consistency in wing and nose angle, distance, and it’s letting the stability of a disc lie to you.

  2. Clean releases also are essential for success in wind, because it’s easier to anticipate wind’s effects on flight when you know what part of the disc (top or flightplate) will be exposed.

  3. The most common reason for wobble is that you’re also imparting off-axis torque, a fancy way of saying that your wrist isn’t in the same plane during the throw.

  4. The way to solve your wobble is to focus on simple wrist mechanics, and getting a clean release. That drill we did on day 2, where we slowed it down to do standstills? We’re gonna go even more reductive, by just tossing discs up and catching them. Try to keep your wrist in the same plane so that the disc comes out without any wobble.

  5. You “win” the game when you’re aware of what the disc is doing as it exits your hand, and you can do an entire session of field work concerned only with the release, and not the results.
