Gatekeeper Resolutions Day 15: Release Points and Stances For Scrambling

Day 15! The next couple days we’re going to throw some shots from unusual stances or release points. These are critical for getting out of jail and saving strokes. Let’s start in a practice field about 75-100 feet from a basket or another target. Find a spot with a tree or bush nearby, or you can bring a folding chair to simulate the obstacle.

  1. Upshots from this distance are usually pretty straightforward when nothing is in your way. But if you’re pinched against a tree or another obstacle it complicates the stance and flight. So let’s practice the following cases a little bit:

    1. Lie is behind obstacle, lunge out to either side as far as you can to throw a backhand (left side of obstacle) and a forehand (right side of obstacle).

    2. Lie is behind obstacle, lunge the “opposite” way to throw a backhand on the right side/forehand on the left side.

    3. Obstacle is at head height and below–practice throwing higher releases–play with your angles, spin, velocity.

    4. Obstacle is at knee height and above–practice throwing lower releases, get down on knees, etc.

  2. You “win” the game when you can figure out how to modify your normal mechanics to get the job done. It doesn’t have to be pretty, but figure out what stances you can make work, and which ones you struggle with.
